Two specific processes where our products are used successfully are:

Pelletization: Agglomeration of iron ores utilizing organic binders

Froth flotation: Depression of hydrophobic gangue by selective separation in froth flotation


Pelletization (Agglomeration of ores)

In iron ore pelletization, bentonite is commonly used as an agglomeration aid to augment pellet growth and add physical strength to the pellets. While bentonite is effective as a binder it has a contaminating effect on the chemical quality of the pellets, adding both silica and aluminum gangue.

This contamination leads to:

  • Lower daily production rate of Fe in the pellet-making process
  • Increased need for upgrading iron ore concentrates reducing concentrator throughput
  • Reductions in iron making efficiency and yields
  • Increased consumption of flux additives in iron making processes
  • Negative effects on sustainability by increasing slag waste and CO2 generation throughout the iron steelmaking chain

Our product brand Peridur® is an organic binder that provides pellet makers with a technically advanced alternative to bentonite. Not only does Peridur function as a consistent and reliable agglomeration aid, it is non-contaminating to the pellets, leaving them with superior metallurgical and chemical qualities.

When Peridur successfully replaces bentonite in the manufacturing of Blast Furnace or Direct Reduction pellets significant cost benefits can be achieved in subsequent iron
making processes. In addition to the benefits mentioned above, Peridur is a completely renewable resource and has a more favorable impact on the environment and sustainability than bentonite.


Froth Flotation

Froth flotation is a process widely used to selectively separate valuable minerals from worthless gangue. The process relies heavily on the differences in the mineral surfaces' hydrophobic character to accomplish this task.

Most minerals in nature are hydrophilic (non-hydrophobic) and do not readily float in froth flotation without the use of chemical reagents known as collectors. Collectors physically adsorb on the precious mineral surfaces rendering the particles hydrophobic and "floatable".

The problem with froth flotation is that certain gangue minerals have hydrophobic surfaces and undesirably float contaminating the precious mineral concentrate. To negate the hydrophobic minerals tendencies to float, depressants are used. They physically adsorb onto the surface of gangue minerals rendering the particles hydrophilic and "non-floatable".

The use of depressants allows for higher precious metal recovery and grades and can improve the economics of downstream processing (e.g. smelting costs)

Depramin® is our series of polymeric depressants specifically engineered to counter the contaminating effects of naturally floating gangue minerals. Depramin selectively adsorbs onto the surfaces of the hydrophobic gangue minerals reducing their tendency to float in froth flotation processes. Depramin has proven itself effective in a wide range of mineral froth flotation
processes, but is primarily used in sulfide mineral flotation (PGMs, Ni, Cu).
